MEDIA RELEASE: 22 February 2008
A new voice in the arena of public policy debate has emerged with new community group, the Redlands Institute officially launched in Redland Shire this week.
The new entity was officially launched last night at a special function at the historic Grandview Hotel by Queensland's Deputy Premier, Mr Paul Lucas MLA and outgoing Redlands Mayor, Don Seccombe alongside more than 75 leading Redlands business and community representatives.
The Institute has nominated the globally experienced architect, Gunther De Graeve, as its President and its Steering Committee comprises representatives across a variety of interest groups including aged care, environment, youth, indigenous people, tourism, information technology, small business, urban planning and development, professional services, small business, agricultural industries, urban planning and all levels of government.
In launching the Institute, Mr Lucas congratulated the Institute on its commitment to advancing the interests of the Shire, and emphasised the importance of a common vision in driving forward the interests of the region.
He said that the Redlands natural attributes ensured it had a special place in South East Queensland but its potential had been hampered by a perception of disharmony within the community as to the desires and directions of the Shire.
Mr De Graeve said the Institute has been formed in response to what has been identified as the need for a united, inclusive and non-partisan voice for the Shire that could work through consensus to enhance the Redland's position amongst high level policy makers.
"A community with a united voice is far more powerful in influencing government at all levels and driving effective outcomes in terms of this Shire's future as we move to 2026 and beyond," Mr De Graeve said.
"Our aim is that the Redlands Institute will be that united voice, positively influencing the future growth, development and prosperity of the Redlands," he said.
